Windows Vista in here! Are you considering an upgrade of your business PC?

The latest release of the Microsoft desktop operating system, and I might add, eagerly awaited, Vista is finally here. If you have purchased a new PC in the last few months you may be aware that PC dealers such as HP, Dell, IBM, etc. have been offering upgrade coupons for systems for systems purchased with XP. You may have seen labels or ads that mentioned “Vista Capable”

Well the release is finally here. If you are ordering a new PC with Vista you should be OK. But what if you want to upgrade a system you purchase 6 months ago, a year ago, or 3 years ago?

As a business computer user there are two major considerations affecting your upgrade (not the only considerations but the major ones). The first consideration – is my current hardware, software and connected devices compatible with Windows Vista? Do I need to upgrade my hardware, are Vista drivers available for my devices, and is my software compatible? The first step in considering an upgrade to Windows Vista is to run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a software tool you download and install on your PC that will scan your computer and “create an easy-to-understand report regarding all known system, device, and program compatibility issues, and recommend ways to resolve them.”

The second consideration is which edition do I purchase? Windows Vista editions are classified by segment – Consumer, Small Business, Medium-Large Businesses.
